Early Morning Exercise Before School

Stimulus-based conversation practice · 3 questions · about 10 minutes

Early Morning Exercise Before School — PSLE oral stimulus picture
Let your child look at the picture for 30 seconds before the first question.

The questions

Ask these in order. Wait five full seconds after each one before helping — the silence is where the thinking happens.

Q1 Describe the stimulus

Look at the picture. What are the students doing before lessons begin?

Look, name, and explain what you see — then add one detail nobody else would notice.

Model answer

In the picture, a group of primary school students is doing morning exercise on the school field before lessons begin. They are standing in rows in their PE attire with their arms raised in a stretch, and a teacher is standing in front leading them. The shadows are long and the light is soft, which shows it is early morning. What I also noticed is that everyone is doing the same movement together, so it is a whole-school routine rather than a CCA session.

Why it scores

Describes the activity, uses the light as evidence of the time, then draws a conclusion about the routine.

  1. Point to what you see"In the picture, I can see…" — name two or three specific things, not just one.
  2. Explain what is happening"It looks like… because…" — link what you see to why it is happening.
  3. Add one closer detail"What I also noticed is…" — this is what lifts a plain answer into a strong one.
Q2 Relate it to yourself

Tell me about a time you exercised in the morning. How did you feel afterwards?

Give a real example from your own life. Say what happened, then how you felt.

Model answer

During the school holidays last year, my father started waking me up at seven to walk with him around the neighbourhood before it got too hot. I did not want to go at all on the first few days and complained the whole way. After about a week, I noticed that I felt more awake for the rest of the morning instead of lying around, and I even started waiting for him at the door. By the end of the holidays it had become the part of the day I looked forward to.

Why it scores

Honest resistance at the start, a gradual change, and a genuine turnaround — very believable.

  1. Set the scene"This reminds me of the time when…" — say when and where in one line.
  2. Say what you did"What I did was…" — one clear action, not a list.
  3. Say how it felt or what you learnt"After that, I felt… because…" — examiners are listening for this part.
Q3 Give your opinion

Do you think schools should start the day with exercise? Why?

Take a clear stand, give a reason, acknowledge the other side, then close.

Model answer

Yes, I feel it is a good idea. A short exercise session wakes students up properly, so the first lesson does not begin with everyone still half asleep. It also gets the whole school moving at least once a day, which matters when many of us sit for most of the school hours and then sit again for homework. I understand that some students travel far and arrive tired, however even ten minutes of light stretching would help more than it would tire them out.

Why it scores

Two clear reasons, then handles the obvious objection with a practical adjustment.

Show the answer frame instead
  1. Take a clear stand"I feel that… / I agree that…" — never start with "maybe".
  2. Give your strongest reason"This is because…" — one solid reason beats three weak ones.
  3. Show you see the other side"I understand why some people feel that…, however…" — this shows maturity.
  4. Close it"That is why I believe…" — a proper ending, not a trailing off.

Common mistakes on this kind of question

Listing without explainingNaming healthy foods is not enough. Say why each one helps.
PreachingAnswers that sound like a poster ("we must all stay healthy") score lower than a real personal habit.
Skipping your own experienceThe examiner wants your routine, not general advice from a health talk.
Answering in one line"Yes, I would." A full answer needs a reason and an example — aim for three or four sentences.
No reason givenEvery opinion needs a "because". Without it, the answer sounds like a guess.

Parent script — how to run this in 10 minutes

  1. Show the picture. Say nothing for 30 seconds.
  2. Ask Q1 exactly as written. Count to five in your head before you help.
  3. After the answer, ask "why?" once more. That single word usually doubles the answer.
  4. Repeat for the remaining questions.
  5. Finish with one thing that was good and one thing to try next time. Only one of each.
